April 30, 2025, marked the 50th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon.
On this day in 1975, the North Vietnamese communists captured the southern democratic capital city of Saigon and won the Vietnam War.
For many Vietnamese refugees and their families like mine—April 30 is a day of mourning.
It’s the day democracy ended, marking the beginning of an exodus of up to 2 million Vietnamese refugees who fled the country and resettled around the world. At least 100,000 of these Vietnamese refugees, called boat people, arrived in Canada.
Our family is among this group.
